A top-drive machine uses belts on the top of the case to pull it through, while a side-drive machine uses belts on both sides of the case to move it forward during taping.

Top-drive machines are better for light, empty or unstable cartons because the top belts press down and stabilise the box during sealing.

Side-drive machines offer greater versatility, handling light, medium, and heavy cartons more consistently.

For mixed warehouse operations with varied carton sizes and weights, side-drive machines tend to be the most cost-effective due to their versatility and reliability.
